One of our clients' family members was recently diagnosed with dementia, making her very vulnerable to financial abuse and exploitation. An unscrupulous neighbor cleaned out her investment and retirement accounts, costing her tens of thousands of dollars in tax debt for making withdrawals without the proper withholdings. We reviewed her information, explained the circumstances to the Internal Revenue Service, and got her tax debt declared "uncollectible," so she no longer has to deal with collection letters and escalating threats to her right to remain in her home.
