Jamaican Family Retrieves Their Inheritance from the State of Texas
October 2025
On October 13, 2025, a Houston woman was appointed the Dependent Administrator of her late uncle's estate. He had eight (8) sisters and brothers, but no wife or children. She originally opened his estate in 2022 with another attorney after her beloved uncle passed way from COVID-19 in his home. That lawyer, unfortunately, was not able to get beyond the administrative hurdles caused by the Texas Estates Code and the attorney ad litem appointed by the probate court in Harris County, Texas. After a long battle and several hearings, we were able to get her and the family one step closer to closure.
Due to the expense and passage of time, all of her uncle's property had been seized: first by the mortgage lender of his home, and then by the great state of Texas in the Unclaimed Property Fund managed by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. We are coordinating with a local business to ensure that all of the money that should have been distributed to my client's mother, aunts, and uncles are redeemed, collected, and ultimately distributed to its rightful owners. Good things take time, and with dedication, effort, and teamwork among people who care, the legal process is well worth it in the long run.
